Senior Business Development Manager


AltaML is a fast-growing startup that focuses on applied Machine Learning (ML). We partner with industry to co-develop Artificial Intelligence (AI) and ML-powered products. We are experts in ML commercialization and help our industrial partners gain a competitive advantage by combining their data and domain expertise with our analytics and ML proficiency. Data informs our every move, and we aim to work quickly, collaboratively, and creatively. We have offices in Edmonton and Calgary and are expanding into Toronto.


AltaML works with progressive partners in industries such as Health, Logistics, Smart Cities and Financial Services.  Sure, we are a tech company, so we offer a well-stocked kitchen including good coffee, sparkling water, and snacks. We are a company like no other – we believe in making small bets, failing fast, and being better together.  Located in the stunning Edison Building in downtown Calgary, we are looking for a Senior Business Development Manager to guide our business development efforts.

What you’ll do:


Your experience with building relationships and understanding customer needs on a deeper level along with an ability to understand and articulate the business and technical frameworks, architectures and solutions will be a key success driver for this role.  You will identify specific prospects/partners to approach while communicating the specific value proposition for their business and use case. Our team focuses on many different products and you will seize the opportunity for growth each time we take on a new idea.


Managing multiple opportunities (both inbound and outbound) through the entire sales cycle including but not limited to:


  • Prospect new sales leads including leveraging your own network
  • Maintain and keep the CRM current and strive to have between 25 and 30 active opportunities at all times at various sales cycle stages 
  • Writing proposals 
  • Managing accounts
  • Creating and developing value propositions
  • Work with cross-functional teams as necessary, and serve as the primary customer contact for all sales-related activities.
  • Develop a sales plan 
  • Provide guidance to customers starting their AI/ML journey on how to pick best-fit solutions
  • Understand the technical requirements of our customers and work closely with the internal development teams to guide the direction of our service offerings
  • Develop long-term strategic partnerships in support of the business
  • Special duties as assigned


What you bring:


  • Proven success with selling new ideas across a variety of industries
  • The ability to persuasively communicate a positive vision of the future enabled by our products that is ground in the reality of what we can technically deliver
  • Experience explaining complex technical ideas in a way that is simple and approachable to non-expert audiences
  • 3-5 years’ experience with building relationships and understanding customer needs on a deeper level
  • Bachelor of Commerce degree or transferrable degree; MBA preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to learn highly technical products and services
  • Ability to create new ideas with a high level of self-motivation to execute them into action
  • Experience whiteboarding to uncover customer problems to position services and products
