Located in the revitalized ICE District in downtown Edmonton, we are looking for a Team Lead, Data Services and Architecture.  This role will provide advice on how we integrate our solutions within our clients’ environments.  

What you’ll do

As the Team Lead, Data Services and Architecture, you will be the most senior member of the Data team in AltaML’s services business. You will have a combination of deep technical expertise and experience, a passion for client delivery and problem solving and a natural curiosity to always be on top of the latest developments in data architecture capabilities both on premise and on the major cloud providers. You will be part of a Services team that delivers world-class AI and ML solutions to enterprise clients, who will need your advice on how to best integrate those solutions into their environments. You will be seen as a leader by your team and your clients and will be counted on as an expert in your field.


  • Provide leadership, mentorship and technical guidance to Data Specialists as they work in data acquisition for AI/ML experimentation
  • Provide leadership, mentorship and technical guidance to Data Specialists and Developers as they develop production data pipelines for AI/ML solutions
  • Provide architecture and technical leadership for data integration efforts required in the development and deployment of AI/ML solutions
  • Support business development and project delivery teams with effort estimation and customer meetings and consultations
  • Assess client’s current state architectures and make recommendations for future state architectures, especially as it is related to data required for AI/ML solutions deployed on premise and/or cloud environments
  • Design and implement solutions with a commitment to excellent customer service
  • Recommend best practices and improvements to current operational processes related to data
  • Explore new capabilities and technologies to drive innovation.
  • Understand Cloud Data best practices around architecture, security and storage to meet various project needs
  • Coordinate and enhance data quality, integration, and availability across clients’ and also internal environments
  • Understand how to simplify data flows and remove unrelated cost from complex and fragmented data architectures
  • Provide advice on how to effectively plan, prioritize, and manage the delivery of data to increase business effectiveness
  • Understand Business requirements and be able to translate them into architectural requirements
  • Follow industry technology trends through self-study and formal training and share that knowledge within the team to promote a healthy learning and knowledge sharing environment

Minimum Requirements

  • At least 5-7 years experience in a variety of positions in IT
  • Undergraduate degree in computer science, computer engineering, information technology or related field or relevant experience.
  • Systems design experience
  • Understanding and experience with Cloud architectures specifically: Google Cloud Platform (GCP), Microsoft Azure or Amazon Web Services (AWS)
  • In-depth knowledge of popular database and data warehouse technologies from Microsoft, Amazon and/or Google (Big Data & Conventional RDBMS), Microsoft Azure SQL Data Warehouse, Teradata, Redshift, BigQuery, Snowflake etc.
  • Be fluent in a few languages, preferably Python
  • Proficient in SQL
  • Proven ability to work with software engineering teams and understand complex development systems, environments and patterns.
  • Experience presenting to/interacting with business stakeholders
  • Ability to multi-task on multiple high priority projects \ deliverables.
  • Strong customer focus, ownership, urgency, and drive.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work well in a team.
  • Effective analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.

Desirable Requirements

  • Experience Architecting Big Data platforms 
  • Experience with BI platforms, reporting tools, data visualization products, ETL engines.
  • Prior experience working as/with Machine Learning Engineers, Data Engineers, or Data Scientists.
  • A certification such as Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect, Google Professional Data Engineer or related AWS Certified Solutions Architect / Big Data or Microsoft Azure Architect
  • Experience or strong interest in people management
